Notes:

  • Data shown on these graphs are from the Sandettie Lightship Buoy automatic weather station. It is the closest station measuring sea temperatures and weather to the Channel swimming routes.
  • Sandettie data is provided by the Met Office: it contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v1.0. Please read the CS&PF detailed notes on Sandettie data and interpreting these graphs and values.
  • More detailed data with tidal ranges and hourly plot points viewed by month can be accessed on the CS&PF website here: http://cspf.co.uk/sandettie-data
  • Daily values taken at 12 noon UTC.
  • Because Sandettie station is a buoy, the air temperature gauge is very near the sea surface. It means that the sea will greatly moderate the air temperature reading. This is the main reason for significant differences when comparing to e.g. Dover or Calais air temperatures. Sandettie readings will always be much closer to the sea temperature, especially on very cold or very warm days.
